I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in Art and began my career as an artist in Austin, Texas, moving with my wife, Meg, to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1990.
After 23 years in commercial graphic design and illustration, I made the shift toward full-time painting in 2009. I now paint primarily in oils, both in my Albuquerque studio and en plein air, painting a variety of subjects but often exploring ways to depict the unique character of the beautiful Southwest. I often use my plein air studies to adapt in the studio, using what I learned while carefully observing the subject in life, but occasionally taking them in a very different direction. I consider the New Mexico outdoors the perfect “classroom” for an artist. I began my college studies in marine biology and have always the appreciated the aesthetic of life in all its forms. I am mostly a representational painter, drawn more to intimate views of nature and the structure of things than “big vista” scenes.
I volunteer with a few art organizations and have served as the 2018 President of Plein Air Painters of New Mexico, an organization of about 400 people nationwide. I greatly enjoy the artist networking process and find real value and enjoyment in getting to know my buyers and those who follow my artwork. I also occasionally teach art workshops at the New Mexico Art League in Albuquerque and in my studio.
My work can be found in collections across the Southwest and abroad. I divide my time between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, NM. Sharing as an “art ambassador” to visitors and locals, I can occasionally be found demo-painting in front of Manitou Galleries (Santa Fe) where my art is represented.
