Genie Gray was born in Duluth, MN, and lived in the Midwest until she was 20 which exposed her to Midwest values. This emphasis on service and giving back to the community inspired her to start a company that provided space for small businesses as well as services such as typing, answering service, telexing. From 1976 to 1989, she owned and actively managed what was then the largest 100%-female-owned business in the State of Oregon.
She eventually earned a Bachelor of Art as well as a Teaching Certificate from San Diego State College. She graduated with distinction. Working as an art teacher allowed her to create and exhibit her art. She worked primarily in oil but also integrated fiber into her paintings. She had two shows in California, the first was a landscape exhibition in Del Mar, and the second was a solo exhibit at a Salon.
In 2005, California was laying off teachers and she moved to Albuquerque, NM, where Genie taught art at private, parochial, and charter schools. She also continued to create her own work. After she retired in 2012, Genie began exploring watercolors. After taking a few watercolor lessons from an award-winning Albuquerque artist she was hooked! Six years ago, she began facilitating a watercolor painting group at a Senior Center that keeps her actively painting with a group of peers.
Most of her work prior to her move to New Mexico featured places that she had visited and of which she had fond memories. Genie’s art now intends to capture a slice of life, an object or thing that she feels should be recorded for posterity. Her goal is to keep on painting, especially plein air. She belongs to and exhibits through the Rainbow Artists’ and the Rio Grande Art Association.
