Artist Statement
I have been travelling the caminos and callejones of New Mexico and Colorado for almost 50 years, capturing villages and vistas in paintings and photographs. This year I had planned to invest in a new mirrorless camera and hit the road, the dirt roads that is. And then a pandemic hit!
So my imagination is all that has been traveling this summer, revisiting some of the dream images in my archives and creating new ones. I printed, mounted, waxed and polished each image with loving care. Art is healing, whether observing or creating and it helped me keep my sanity during these days of social distancing. I grew up in the Colorado Rockies and have always drawn energy from the mountains, so living in the mountains of New Mexico in my old age makes me happy. I am involved in the positive artistic energy of Placitas – managing the low power FM radio station and being a founding member of Wild Hearts Gallery (an artists’ collective).
Many landscape and architectural images have been published in book form, two in collaboration with cousin and poet Karen Biddle: Placitas del Sol (now in its second printing) and Pilgrims and Promises with photographs, poetry and documentation on 28 historic New Mexico churches and moradas. The newest is a new book of black and white images and their stories titled Beyond the Noise.
