Jaci Fischer - Biography

Biography

Jaci Fischer was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She received her BFA at the University of Northern Colorado and went on to earn her MFA in drawing and design at the University of Colorado at Boulder. After graduate school, she was juried into the First and Second Colorado Biennial art exhibition at the Denver Art Museum which is still a highlight of her career. While in Boulder, Jaci and a few friends start Front Range Women in the Visual Arts - a group that exhibited at several venues around Colorado. This group also helped hire two women artists to the faculty of the university art department in Boulder which at the time there were none.

Using her design experience and education, Jaci went into commercial art and finally settled on furniture design. Furniture design has been a great design puzzle, incorporating style and function to produce sales. To date she has had several furniture groups sell nationally and still works in that field.

Along the way she participated in juried shows and has received several awards and prizes. Jaci was part of an invitational show at the Boulder Museum of Art, had a couple of two-person art shows and was selected for art fairs in Colorado and Missouri. She also earned her art teaching degree at the University of California, San Jose. She has continued to refine her style, techniques, and subject matter. A few years ago, she launched a large series of contemporary, hand constructed silver and mixed stone jewelry pieces for the local museums.

Artist Statement

I love that lines can unravel an image. No matter how many workshops/classes I take or how much time I spend painting or how many paintings I create, in the end, I return to lines in some form to define, create interest or add subtle texture. It has created an artistic language for me.

Pencil and paper were my first medium. I now work in acrylic and oil with mixed media. I have also worked in fiber, jewelry design and furniture design. My inspiration started in college drawing classes: in those years abstract expressionism was still a strong influence in the art education world, and the idea of using interesting lines was one method that was taught and stressed. At that time, I drew or painted only abstract pieces. My current paintings still have expressionistic influences and design qualities, but they include realistic elements and tell a story. Sometimes the stories are existing myths, or a creation of a myth or just a momentary experience.
