After finishing art school and an apprenticeship with James Hubble, I eventually moved to New Mexico, drawn – as were many artists before me – by its beauty. I chose to make a living in something other than art, as I could see that there was a conflict between making art for money and making art. To make money, I started Ring Brick Floors and retired 40 years later, leaving me to paint and sculpt without regard to salability.
In my painting I strive to capture an elusive feeling I get from my subject - usually from nature - that, if successful, I can see in the finished work. I paint exclusively in plein air rather than from photographs because – in my opinion - photos subtract the dimension of time. I am referring to time in terms of recording the constantly changing light, so the painting records that movement, giving life, expression and dimension to the work. Once I complete the outside painting session, I consider the painting finished.
