Biography
Alex has been making ceramic tiles for over 25 years. She began her relationship with clay at the Rhode Island School of Design where she graduated with a BFA in Ceramics in 1996. Her current collections of tiles are inspired by her surroundings in Northern New Mexico, and she enjoys spending time out in the field looking for specimens to study for her next collection.
Alex sells her work at just a few juried fine art and craft shows annually as well as the occasional gallery show.
Artist Statement
Alex Kurtz makes one of a kind, ceramic tiles. Each tile is unique, handmade and fired with solar power in her Taos mesa studio. The subject matter she focuses on is mainly local flora, birds and bugs with the occasional exotic subject matter thrown in. This current collection of tiles is inspired by some of the many wildflowers found in New Mexico. Many of her tiles are highly sculptural and made to hang on the wall. All tiles are kiln fired multiple times to almost 2000 degrees and all finished surfaces are fired ceramic glazes.
