Rick Hatfield was born and raised in the Texas panhandle. After visiting New Mexico throughout his childhood, he moved to Zuni in 2004. He has lived in New Mexico since, and currently lives in Placitas. He is a woodcarver, musician, and furniture maker. Rick earned his MEd. in Educational Psychology from Texas State University and spent most of his career as a mental health provider in public schools, non-profit agencies, and private practice. He taught psychology and play therapy classes at the University of Texas and Austin Community College. His interest in the natural world, folk and indigenous art, and spirituality has led to exploration of wood carving, painting, bead work and mosaics. His current work is in many ways, the culmination of all these interests. He seeks to bring “playfulness” to his work. Rick has exhibited his work at San Juan College Gallery (Farmington, NM), Feat of Clay Gallery (Aztec, NM), Corrales Fine Art Gallery (Corrales, NM), and the Placitas Studio Tour (Placitas, NM).
